If you asked me 8years ago what I thought the next big thing was I most probably would have said STOCKS. My interest in the price movements and the general trend in the stock market was so intense that I had a lot of newspaper cut-outs on share prices from different years and stories of the good fortunes of many from the stock market. I read a story of a journalist who collected a loan of 11milliion naira from a bank, for what I can't remember anymore but he eventually decided to invest the loan in a particular share. As the story goes, after about two months he decided to cash out and he had made 33million naira in return. It was stories like this that fanned the embers of interest in the stock market.
My answer to the question changed after the global economic crisis, as the total market capitalization in the Nigerian Stock Exchange dropped drastically. A lot of people lost their life savings, people who borrowed money from friends and families found it difficult to repay their debts. In the period of boom of the capital market in Nigeria a lot of banks came up with margin financing for those who were interested in the capital market but who didn't have the funds to engage in buying and selling. So if you ask me now what I think the next big thing is I most probably would say MOBILE BANKING.
